Tapping into paradise on Earth

MANY young Westerners are going East to build their lives and careers through education as the economies of their countries experience slowing growth and less opportunities for gainful employment due to the global recession.

In China, rapid economic and structural changes have sparked market reforms which are changing the country and its current high growth trends are expected to continue.

Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) board member Datuk Dr Paul Chan anticipates that the robust growth will generate new ideas, technologies and business models in China, which will set trends and make it a leader in many aspects of modern life in the future.

USIM has recently signed a collaboration of partnership with GEM International College of Global EduTech Management (GEM) Group in Suzhou, China making it the first Malaysian public university to enhance its ties with the nation.

A team of USIM board of directors led by its chancellor Tan Sri Mohd Yusof Noor and vice chancellor Professor Datuk Muhamad Muda visited Dushu Lake Education Town in Suzhou at the invitation of GEM. Also present were officials from the Ministries of Higher Education and Finance.

They also toured Global Institute of Software Technology (GIST), a software college formed from a GEM-Microsoft partnership, located in the Suzhou new district.

Impressed by the infrastructure at Dushu Lake Education Park, Mohd Yusof says that an exchange programme between the two countries will allow students to participate in the immersion semesters at Suzhou and enrich and broaden their experience in China.

GEM International College was founded by PY Lai, a Malaysian and former president of Motorola China. One of the key objectives of GEM is to facilitate the linkage between GEM's colleges in China and universities in Malaysia and the Asian region through education. GEM International College is one of the first to be set up in the Dushu Lake Education township in 2003. Over the past seven years, the area has seen rapid growth with the establishment of more than 10 universities. Among them are Nanking University, Suzhou University, Renmin University, South East University and Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University.

Suzhou, a city of just over six million inhabitants, is the historic silk capital of China. It is about an hour's drive northwest of Shanghai. Being an integral part of the Yangtze River Delta area, it has a rich history dating back more than 2,500 years. It is home to Sun Zi and the setting for his book Art of War. European explorer Marco Polo called Suzhou the Venice of China. The Chinese call it "paradise on Earth".
